Tooth Colored Fillings

With the advent of modern esthetic dentistry it is rare in many practices (especially ours!) to use metal fillings to restore small to moderate sized areas of decay (cavities). We use a material known as a composite resin (tooth colored filling). It is a resin bonded restoration that sets via exposure to a specific light wavelength. They have multiple advantages over metal fillings:

• More esthetic
• More conservative- less tooth structure removed to place
• Less sensitive- resin poorly conducts hot and cold impulses
• Bonding aspect can strengthen remaining tooth structure
• Wear rate of composite closely approaches that of enamel
