Oral DNA Testing

Recent advances in salivary testing for the bacteria known to be causative for periodontal disease have been implemented by our office. Through a simple saliva sample and using a DNA-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) we are able to isolate and quantify periodontal bacteria. The sample is sent to Oral DNA Labs® (a division of Quest Diagnostic Labs®) for analysis. Upon receipt of the analysis a My Perio Path® report is sent to us with determination of the bacteria present, their relative levels along with specific treatment recommendations. Some bacteria are very tissue invasive, and hard to eradicate. Some are transmissible from person to person. Some are commonly found in re-occurring infections. The test gives a baseline for comparison to show effectiveness of treatment when retesting is done after treatment.

To previous method for “culturing” these type bacteria was available in the past. The bacteria are anaerobic in nature so standard methods of culture were ineffective.
This test allows us the ability to treat the bacteria causing periodontal disease in a targeted and specific manner.

Who can benefit from this test?

  • Persons identified as having bleeding periodontal pockets 4mm or greater in depth
  • Persons with a family history of periodontal disease
  • Persons with cardiovascular disease
  • Persons with diabetes
  • Persons with salivary disfunction
  • Persons prior to cardiovascular surgery
  • Persons prior to joint replacement surgery
  • Persons about to undergo chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • Persons who are immunocompromised
