If a toothache has interrupted your plans for the day, don’t panic. Here’s how to keep your discomfort under control until you can see your emergency dentist.

Common Causes of Toothaches

Contrary to what you have heard, an occasional toothache isn’t normal. It’s a symptom of an underlying problem, like:

  • Decay
  • Enamel loss
  • Breaks or fractures
  • Failing restorations
  • Infections

No matter the issue, it isn’t something to ignore or a small problem can cause you to lose your tooth. Don’t wait to see if your discomfort goes away. It’s best to contact an emergency dentist right away.

Managing Toothaches at Home

While you wait to see your dentist, you can stay comfortable by following a few tips:

  • Take an OTC Pain Reliever: Take an over-the-counter pain reliever to manage your discomfort. Applying a cold compress can also reduce pain.
  • Watch What You Eat: Eat soft foods that require minimal chewing. Avoid any foods or drinks that are hot, cold, or acidic. Don’t chew with your tooth until after you’ve seen your dentist.
  • Rinse with Salt Water: Rinse your mouth with salt water to reduce pain and inflammation. It will also neutralize harmful oral bacteria.
  • Elevate Your Head: Sleep with your pillow elevated to prevent blood from pooling in your head, which can cause dental pain to worsen.

Contact an Emergency Dentist

Your emergency dentist will get you into the office quickly. They’ll examine your mouth to pinpoint the source of your discomfort and create a personalized treatment plan. Besides a visual examination, they may review digital X-rays or perform other diagnostic testing. Depending on the culprit, you may need a filling, root canal therapy, gum disease treatment, a new restoration, or another solution.

Don’t worry about a large bill because you can use your dental insurance to lower the amount you will pay out-of-pocket. Besides covering your consultation and any diagnostic services, your insurance can pay 50% to 80% of common restorative procedures after meeting your annual deductible.

Don’t wait until it is too late. Your dentist will provide the prompt care you need to stop your pain and save your smile.
