Take a moment to list off all the things that make a great oral care routine. Once you’re done, check it over. Is proper toothbrush storage on that list? If not, don’t worry, you’re not being graded—yet! If you want to learn how to store your toothbrush for optimal oral care, continue reading.

What’s the Big Deal About Toothbrush Storage?

Your toothbrush is the one tool you use repeatedly when you care for your teeth. Without proper storage, it can play host to a plethora of nasty bacteria. You may not give a second thought to your constant companion once you’re done, but its safety is important!

How Should I Store My Toothbrush?

There are several ways to improve the living conditions of your toothbrushes:

1. Keep it Upright and Airy

Give your toothbrush fresh air by shaking it dry before storing it upright in a toothbrush holder. This position allows excess water to drain away, preventing the accumulation of moisture that can create a breeding ground for bacteria.

2. Avoid Contact with Other Brushes

When storing multiple toothbrushes, ensure their bristles don’t touch. Use holders with multiple compartments to keep brushes separate and avoid cross-contamination. Contact between bristles can lead to the transfer of germs.

3. Keep it Away from the Toilet

Imagine filling an aerosol can full of toilet water and spraying it every time you flush. That actually happens with open toilets. Be sure to maintain a safe distance of at least three feet between your toothbrush and the toilet. This will minimize exposure to airborne particles.

4. Keep It Covered

If you have a small bathroom that won’t allow for proper distancing, you can purchase a cover for your toothbrush. While it might seem counterintuitive, covering your toothbrush can actually protect it from airborne particles and contaminants. Choose a toothbrush cover with ventilation holes to allow air circulation and prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. Don’t use random items from your house like sandwich bags or foil.

5. Sunlight Exposure

Sunlight can sterilize surfaces naturally, so consider storing your toothbrush in an area that sits in the light. However, make sure it’s not in direct contact with direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as this can damage the bristles.

By adopting these toothbrush storage practices, you can enhance the longevity of your brush! Not only that, but properly storing your brushing companion also contributes to optimal oral hygiene. So, give your toothbrush the care it deserves, and it will continue to be a reliable partner in your daily smile routine.
