Thanksgiving is the perfect time of year to express our gratitude to those in our lives who are there for us or show us kindness and support. It’s important to remember and say thank you to the people, places, and things that we might otherwise take for granted. In all the business of the season, don’t forget that your teeth play an important role in your life, too. Without them, you wouldn’t be able to eat the many delicious treats that come with this holiday, like turkey salad or pumpkin pie. It’s important to maintain dental hygiene to prevent dental issues from cropping up this holiday. Keep reading to learn 4 ways you can show your teeth that you care!

#1: Bring What You Need

If you know you’ll be traveling this turkey day, plan to take a toothbrush and floss with you so that you can keep your mouth clean. You’ll be grateful you did if anything happens like a cranberry gets stuck between your teeth. Not only that, but you won’t have to worry that coffee breath will offend anyone when you can take a few moments to freshen up after the main meal.

You can find travel-size items at most stores that are convenient to pack or carry but if not, your supplies from home will suffice. Simply tuck them into a plastic baggy and bring them along!

#2: Reduce Sugar Intake

It wouldn’t be autumn without your favorite fall treats, and you’ve been looking forward to a warm slice of pumpkin pie all year long. While it’s safe to enjoy in moderation, remember that sugar attracts harmful bacteria that contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. You might want to skip dessert, or cut down on portion sizes. Drinking a glass of water after will rinse your mouth clear of remaining unwanted food particles.

#3: Watch Out for Wine

If you assumed that red wine could stain your teeth, you were right! Did you know, though, that white wine also can leave them discolored? Neither option is entirely safe, and to add insult to injury, wine is also acidic. The ingredients eat away the protective enamel leaving your pearly whites more vulnerable to injury and disease. If you plan to indulge anyway, do so in moderation.

#4: Maintain Your Routine

Many people travel to visit with family and friends for the holiday which can interrupt your usual schedule. As a result, you might be tempted to skip brushing or flossing your teeth for a night or two. While it’s convenient to let things slide, it’s not doing your mouth any favors. Maintain your regular dental hygiene routine of brushing and flossing once in the morning and again before bed at night. This ensures your mouth is cared for and helps prevent potential problems from developing.

Now you know how to show your teeth some well-deserved appreciation this Thanksgiving!
